Base excess and lactate as prognostic indicators for patients admitted to intensive care - 15 years later

چکیده
Introduction Identifying patients who may deteriorate on the ward and need admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) is imprecise. Numerous variables, alone or in combination, have been used to identify patients who may benefit from ICU admission. A predictive test should be accurate, reliable, easy to measure and cheap. [1] 15 years ago an observational study from our unit showed that both base excess (BE) and lactate, or combination of both, can be used to predict outcome in patients admitted to ITU [2]. We replicated this study to find out if BE and lactate are still useful prognostic indicators for patients admitted to ITU.

Metabolic acid-base status in critically ill patients: is standard base excess correlated with serum lactate level?
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES To correlate standard base excess (SBE) with serum lactate level and demonstrate the independent prognostic significance of each one. METHODS In a retrospective study, we retrieved data from 333 patients of our prospectively collected database of 7-bed medical intensive care unit of a 1800-bed university hospital. RESULTS The results have shown a poor correlation b...
متن کاملSerum lactate as a prognostic factor in coronary artery bypass graft operation by on pump method
Background: Lactic acidosis in cardiac surgical patients is a manifestation of systemic inflammation and excess pro-inflammatory cytokine production. This investigation was designed to integrate basic concepts about lactate acidosis with a clinically used of serum lactate in patients under coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) by on pump method. Methods: From August to September 2012, 15 patie...
متن کاملA comparison of prognostic significance of strong ion gap (SIG) with other acid-base markers in the critically ill: a cohort study
BACKGROUND This cohort study compared the prognostic significance of strong ion gap (SIG) with other acid-base markers in the critically ill. METHODS The relationships between SIG, lactate, anion gap (AG), anion gap albumin-corrected (AG-corrected), base excess or strong ion difference-effective (SIDe), all obtained within the first hour of intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and the hospita...
متن کاملPrediction of Respiratory Morbidities in Late Preterm Neonates Using Cord Blood Arterial Lactate and Base Excess
Background: Late preterm neonates may have the external appearance and behavior similar to their counterparts. However, they are susceptible to various neonatal morbidities , due to their physiological and metabolical immaturity. To assess the correlation between cord blood arterial lactate levels and base excess with the development ofrespiratory distress in late preterm neonat...
متن کاملThe effect of stress and hemodynamic indices of patients admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit
Introduction: Hospitalization in the cardiac care unit (CCU) is a stressful event that can adversely affect the patient's recovery process. Another factor that may be affected by stress is hemodynamic indices. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of stress on hemodynamic indices in patients admitted to the CCU. Materials and Methods: The present study is a descriptive correlational...
